Renaissance Faire Book Review:

"AUNT DIMITY SLAYS THE DRAGON" by Nancy Atherton, Viking, 232 pages, $24.95

"…Dragon" is the 14th book in author Nancy Atherton's Aunt Dimity mystery series, featuring the exploits of Lori Shepherd, an American transplant living in the small English village of Finch with her husband, Bill, and 6-year-old twin sons.

Lori's overactive imagination is always getting her in trouble, and ever since the "incident" with the vampire a couple of months ago, she's decided to rein in her nosiness and be a "normal" housewife.
It isn't long, though, before Lori realizes how boring normalcy can be, so when a Renaissance fair by the name of King Wilfred's Faire comes to town, she welcomes it as a break from her daily routine.

Renaissance Faire Artist Writes Book

 

Jan Roblin may be best known at the Spanish Oaks School of Art for her artwork and teaching others how to tap into their own inner artist.

She’s been inspired by some of the Shoals’ most historic people, places and events, including Helen Keller, Trowbridge’s Ice Cream and Sandwich Bar and the annual Renaissance Faire.

More recently, the artist has put her talent toward the writing of a book, “Planet of Dreams...”

In the book, Roblin has included reproductions of her art, primarily the paintings she did for the Renaissance Faire…

Novelist and Shrewesbury Renaissance Faire Character

Thirteen years is a long time to slog away, trying to get a book published. It's especially long when your firstborn, finding you sad over yet another rejection, offers to empty his piggy bank so you can publish your book.

Still, it's worth it for Bellevue wife and mom Gerri (Garding) Russell, 44. She wrote seven manuscripts, sent queries, got an agent, won contests and still wasn't published.

That changed a few weeks ago, when Dorchester Publishing notified her she'd won their American Title II romance-writing contest with her novel "The Warrior Trainer," and that it will publish the book in 2007. The contest required writers to submit scenes online over several months, and await vote totals to see if they made the cuts…

Russell and her family act as "scenery players" in the Shrewesbury Renaissance Faire in Kingsbury, Ore., near Corvallis. She's done that the past seven years, and made all the costumes.

It satisfies her love of history and characters.

"I act as an herbal woman," she said. "My husband's a tanner, and the kids are whatever they choose to be."
