Pittsburgh Renaissance Festival Announces Affordable Fun for Everyone, Entertainment Lineup and Themed Weekends

The Pittsburgh Renaissance Festival will open on Aug. 29 for six festive weekends including Labor Day. On each Festival day at 10:30 a.m., King Henry and Queen Anne will visit the village of Morelandshire, a re-creation of a 16th-century marketplace in Merrie Olde England, to welcome patrons from all over the tri-state region.

 

His Majesty hath proclaimed the finest year of entertainment to be seen in the last 500 years filled with "affordable fun for everyone." Patrons can expect to see many new characters and acts on the stages, in the streets and throughout the kingdom. Musical acts this year include Cast In Bronze, the only musical act in the world featuring a four-ton medieval instrument called the Carillon; Celtic Commotion, a new bagpipe and drum trio; Ar Eigean Gael, a Pittsburgh-based Irish folk quartet; Naughty Bawdy Babes, singing tavern wenches; Porter & Stout, a musical pirate duo; Terry Griffith, the Irish Troubadour; and Sean O'Donnell, the King's Bagpiper. New main stage acts include Flourish & Fool, a dynamic balancing and acrobatic comedy duo; Mad Mechanicals, a Shakespearian improv comedy group where audience participation takes center stage; Buckle & Swash, a sword fighting comedy duo; and Lady Mesmer the Hypnotist.

 

At the King's request, returning to the kingdom are The Knights of Noble Cause, chivalrous knights jousting each Festival day in three exciting competitions, as well as audience-favorites the Washing Well Wenches who offer an amusing water-themed show full of good, clean fun. Also back by popular demand are The German Brothers, a Teutonic rapping duo imported from Bavaria; Arsene of Paris, an internationally-renowned mime, comedian and juggler; The Marquiche, King of Fools; and Great Balls of Fire, a fire eating show.

 

Through Oct. 4 each weekend will feature different activities and entertainment, appealing to the many nationalities in the region such as German, Irish and Scottish. This year's weekends include Opening Weekend: An Adventure to the Past (Aug. 29-30); Children's Weekend: Prince, Princess & Pirate Party (Sept. 5-7); Irish Festivalis (Sept. 12-13); Wine Revelry (Sept. 19-20); Celtic Fling (Sept. 26-27); and Oktoberfest: A Final Huzzah! (Oct. 3-4).

 

The Pittsburgh Renaissance Festival and Artisan's Marketplace is a medieval amusement park offering affordable family fun, fantasy and adventure and featuring combat jousting, games of skill, authentically costumed performers providing continuous entertainment, food and drink fit for a King, and over 100 master artisans exhibiting fine arts and crafts.
