Medieval Festival in Cook's Creek (Winnipeg,Manitoba,Canada)

…Held on the grounds of the Immaculate Conception Church, the festival is a flashback to the days of yore. Costumed performers will indulge the audience in equestrian displays, live jousting, and safe swordplay. The jam-packed day program… also features a medieval market, an ale garden, and medieval games for kids. There will even be an open chess tournament in the afternoon, where the final match will be played using live human "pieces" decked out as kings, queens and pawns.

For those with pre-booked dinner tickets, the party continues into the wee hours with a four-course dinner (succulent wild boar is on the menu) and medieval dance and theatre show, capped by a celebratory bonfire…

Medieval festivals are big business south of the border, with the Renaissance Faire circuit drawing hundreds of thousands of fans each year (Minnesota's RenFaire has an annual attendance of about 275,000, making it the largest in the United States). But though the theme hasn't yet caught fire in Canada, the appeal is unmistakable. "The concept of chivalry brings a bit of romance," says Senft, a self-professed romantic.

Medieval dress isn't mandatory, though attendees are encouraged to come in costume -- and come ready to be amazed.

"People will be surprised by the immediacy of jousting," says Calgary jouster Radar Goddard, whose team donates its time to the Cook's Creek event.

"Even if you've seen it a hundred times in A Knight's Tale, until you can actually hear the horses, smell the sweaty leather, and see the speed at which it breaks...
