Helping to Ease People's Pain

Connie Seo credits the years as a competitive gymnast with giving her the ability to focus and to set her mind on something with the determination to know that she can succeed.

It is this determination that Seo brings to her new practice, the Serenity Chiropractic and Wellness Center at 2600 Post Road in Southport.

"Gymnastics taught me a lot about discipline, sportsmanship and respect," said Seo, whose approach with her patients is to spend time listening to them. "A lot of times patients need to talk and it is important to listen to their problems. This helps to further diagnose what is going on with their body and to relieve stress."

Common ailments that bring patients to a chiropractor include low back pain, a herniated disc, headaches, neck pain, sinus congestion, allergies, and muscle strains or problems with the sciatic nerve. Seo said many of the ailments are stress- or work-related. People sit at computers or drive a car with bad posture or they may develop tension headaches because of their work, she said.

"Everyone responds to pain or treatment differently," said Seo, who believes in treating patients in the most conservative manner. She knows her limitations and believes if she cannot help patients, she will refer them to medical doctors, for possible surgical intervention…

At the center, Seo offers chiropractic, acupuncture and massage therapy to contribute to the patient's overall wellness. She explained that acupuncture stimulates or sedates energy in the body. Its purpose is to balance the energy. If the energy is stagnant, the needles allow the energy to flow throughout the body. Acupuncture is effective in treating headaches and sinus conditions...

Seo received her degree in chiropractic from the National University of Health Sciences in Lombard, Ill. She earned her degree in acupuncture from the National Academy of Medical Acupuncture in Washington, D.C. She earned her undergraduate degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute State University in Blacksburg, Va…

Her gymnastics career began in the fourth grade, the same time she realized she wanted to be a chiropractor. She credits her going to a chiropractor with helping her to maintain her physical health and to understand her body in the way it moves and how it can be affected. She began to understand how a chiropractor can help an athlete. Even at the age of 10, through her treatments, Seo realized how good her body felt. She developed more motion in her body, allowing her to perform at a higher level of gymnastics…
